Q: What is a Mentor?
A: A Mentor is someone who gives caring time and support with a young person. It is a relationship of sharing knowledge and interests.

Q: How can I participate as a Mentor?
A: There are many opportunities:

  • One to One mentors
  • Family mentors
  • Group Mentors
  • Peer Mentors
  • Tutors and coaches
  • Special event mentors

Q: How long will it take before I can become a Mentor?
A: It takes an average of 3 weeks for a new volunteer to become active. Mentor volunteering takes time due to the screening process involved but special events volunteers may take less time.

Q: Is there an orientation?
A: Yes. Volunteers spending time with youth are required to attend an orientation session that identifies:

  • Hull programs and services
  • Safe volunteering
  • Mentoring relationships

Orientation sessions are conducted regularly and additional training & orientation is provided through the program involved.

Q: Do you provide other types of training?
A: Yes. Numerous opportunities are available in addition to specific programs however, volunteers are required to contribute a minimum of 100 hours before registering for additional training such as:

  • St John’s First Aid and Level A CPR
  • Diversity Awareness Training
  • Suicide Intervention
  • Therapeutic Crisis Intervention
  • Aboriginal Awareness

Q: What programs need Mentor volunteers?
A: Most programs at Hull engage Mentor volunteers.

Q: What age groups will I work with?
A: Potentially youth ages 6 through 18 within residential programs and youth and young adults within community based programs

Q: Where are you located?
A: We have a number of locations in and around the city depending upon the program. Many volunteers participate at our main campus located at 2266 Woodpark Avenue SW. Community based programs are more disbursed.

Q: Are there any costs to being a volunteer?
A: There may be some travel costs involved.

Q: Do I require any type of security clearance?
A: Yes. Hull will direct you to securing as required:

  • Police check
  • Child Welfare Intervention check
  • Reference check
