The Family School Liaison (FSL) service supports Calgary Board of Education (CBE) students enrolled in Kindergarten through grade 12 to address concerns that are impacting their functioning at school.
FSL works with students and their families in setting goals, planning strategies and accessing resources that will assist students to be successful in school and in their community.
Our service helps to address the emotional, social and behavioral needs of students where these difficulties are impacting their learning.
Part of the Calgary Rocky View Student Health Partnership, FSL is made up of 4 separate contracts:
- Area FSL – services schools in CBE Areas 3, 4 & 5
- Systems FSL – is city wide in specialized CBE classes
(i.e. READY GATE)
- Mental Health Classrooms FSL – junior & senior high school students enrolled in classrooms designed to support those with severe internalizing mental health issues.
- Community Outreach in Pediatrics/Psychiatry in Education (COPE) – screening & consultation provided by physician led teams for elementary students. Opportunities for possible medical issues are explored.
All referrals to the service come through the student’s school and must have parent/guardian consent.
The Student Health Partnership (SHP) is collaborative. Students a long with their parents, teachers and health-care professionals work together to help make the most of learning opportunities and meet identified goals.
Some of the concerns we help with are:
- School-based concerns - motivation, transitions, attention
- Emotional concerns - anger, self-esteem, grief
- Social concerns - peer conflicts, friendship skills
- Family concerns - divorce, parenting strategies, home-school communication
- Behavioral issues - safety, bullying, defiance
- Other - physical health related issues
Eligibility Criteria:
- Referrals are initiated and submitted by the student’s school.
- Students do not require crisis intervention
- Students are not receiving, or eligible to receive, services from another provider
- Students have social, emotional and/or behavioral needs which are impacting their educational outcomes and these can not be addressed by the district, but can be addressed within the school setting
- Students can experience improved educational outcomes through short-term goals
